Comprar un 107

Antes de comprar un 107 / Before buying a 107

Modelo y año / Model & year

Although all 107's models are highly desidered cars some models are often more popular than others. In particular the most desired ones are:

  • Any AMG version with documentation to demonstrate it. Most are just plain SLs with AMG bits as an add-on by the owner.
  • The 300SL
  • The 500SL

Some others sought after because of their rarity:

  • Any SLC or SL original factory rally edition
  • 500SLC & 450SLC 5.0
  • models VIN 107026...

Year-wise the last genreation of 107's (1986-1989) is the most technically advanced and so recommended. Make sure the car you are considering was manufactured as opposed to registered within the appriate year span (important difference to avoid late unpleasant surprises).

On the other hand if a car with more years is more appealing to you because of it's 'true classic appeal', it's good to know there are no models reported as faulty or less reliable, besides the obvious aging and technical differences.

In this section you'll find more information on models and changes throughout the years.

Equipamiento / Options

Some options, equipment, documentation... can make a 107 more desirable than others. These are:

  • Records: History of invoices of all repairs, mantainance log, original documentation for the car, owner's manual and other manuals, etc.
  • Rear seats
  • ABS
  • Cars kept indoors usually age much better than the rest
  • Clima or air conditioning
  • Originality of all switches, gadgets, elements,...: stereo, upholstery, aerial, etc. and everything in good and working order.

Revisiones pre-compra y checklist / Pre-buying revision and checklists

Before buying the car make sure you go to see it. Review it as throroughly as you can and take it for a test drive paying special attention to any noises, make sure all switches and electronics work, check the vehicle for differences between the seller's description and the actual car, etc. Some checks you can do are:

  • General state of the vehicle
  • Rust: Take special care if you are considering a car from some place where winters can be tough such as Germany or the UK. Besides the fact that they have rainy weathers, during winter salt is used to prevent water turning into ice on the roads. Salted water is extremely corrosive and these cars really suffer from it. This can be very expensive to repair.
  • Is there any official documentation that can be used to double-check the mileage against?
  • Has the car been mantained in some official dealer garage? can you double-check mileage with them? anything interesting in their records about the car? crashes maybe?
  • Wear on the fabric/leather of the driver's seat or the driving wheel and the play in the steering wheel can give us some idea of mileage.
  • Make sure whe you test drive the car the engine is cold. Some cars might start first time with the engine at working temperature but may not when cold
  • Check for smoke from the exhaust when starting the car and when accelerating.
  • Check in engine and gearbox for stains of oils or other liquids synthomatic of leaks.
  • Check chromes and woods for cracks, flaking, scratches, irregularities, etc.
  • Check engine and gearbox oil levels and colour. If levels are low and oils look black, the car has not had a careful owner.
  • Check the engine oil refilling tap for a white 'maionesse' looking substance. This means problems.
  • Make sure the soft top has no fungus or moisture in it's interior and the obvious scratches and others on the outside
  • Can you hear the engine, or somewhere near the engine, anything sounding like cla-cla-cla-... a clacking noise? Yes means problems
  • If the car has to undergo some sort of mandatory official government based technical inspection, make sure you are there when it takes place. Some owners may know the mechanic and the he might be more tolerant with the car out of the friendship with the owner willing to sell the car.
  • If you go for a 380sl make sure it's got the single to double-chain conversion done, otherwise your engine might just die unexpectedly.
  • Subframe-recall, very important: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r-c107-sl-slc-class/1450267-sub-frame-recall-information.html
  • Can you ouble-check with some sort of official body the history of the car: any accidents, how many previous owners, etc.

  • Other checklists:

Otros / Other

After buying the car it is highly advisable to service it and make sure everything is ok now that we have some more time to spend with it. Proper care will make these cars unbreakable:

  • Change all liquids, oils and filters. Specially engine and gearbox oils.
  • Check the exhaust
  • Silentblocks
  • Play in the steering wheel, the wheels and wheel alignemet.
  • Brakes and disc brakes
  • Battery
  • Clean the injectors and replace spark plugs
  • Any other checks your mechanic might feel necessary

An area to be checked by a competent shop is the front sub-frame condition. The older 107's had a problem with cracks in the sub-frame. Some cars were recalled and repaired, others are not included in the recall, therefore, if cracked, will require sub-frame replacement. This is an expessive repair requiring a frame shop facility or MB dealer.
